In 2021, at the age of 34, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and experienced complete hair loss. Despite more than two decades of supporting others through hair loss, nothing fully prepared me for the emotional impact of losing my own hair.
It gave me a deeper understanding of the vulnerability and identity shifts amongst many other things that accompanied the journey.
Finding myself in denial; I sought support, however, what I encountered was a service that lacked empathy and inclusivity. A request for a wig in my natural Afro texture was denied — a moment that quietly confirmed the change I had long believed was needed within this sector.
